Dr. Nik's Top 10 Instructor Tips

We've got your back.

Bring Enthusiasm and Humor

Your attitude sets the tone—learning is easier and more engaging when you bring genuine enthusiasm and joy to teaching. A positive mindset creates a welcoming environment that improves performance and earns rave reviews. Don’t be afraid to be silly or memorable: use humor, mnemonics, rhymes, or even funny phrases like “What a beautiful sternoclavicular joint you have” to lighten the mood and help retention. Share your own real-life injuries and stories to make the material relatable and fun. Enthusiasm is infectious—use it to your advantage.

Model Healthy Habits

Be a role model for your students by maintaining good sleep, exercise, and self-care routines. Regular exercise and consistent sleep are proven to improve memory, reduce stress, and support better teaching and learning. Consider challenging the class to voluntarily participate in athletics as a way to review anatomy. Participate with students. Talk about muscles activated, actions at joints, eccentric and concentric contraction, and the importance of proper form. Some favourites include push-ups, planking, wall sits and chin-ups.

Ask & Answer Questions

Your students bring unique perspectives and experiences—use them! Invite students to share relevant stories or insights, and pay attention to their questions, which can inspire you to improve your own teaching methods. Remember: teaching is a two-way street, and students can surprise you with their creativity and understanding.

Keep Lessons Interactive and Organized

An organized, efficient classroom keeps students engaged and maximizes learning. Start by teaching students how to orient themselves with concepts like anterior vs. posterior or left vs. right. Put students gently on the spot to answer and explain. This encourages self-analysis and reinforces the idea that you don’t truly know something until you can teach it. Keep lessons short, hands-on, and active—less sitting and more doing leads to better performance and real-world application. Simple methods like drawing on each other with washable markers to review movements and palpations improve retention. Finally, set the tone by eliminating distractions.

Regular Review

Encourage students to build success through consistent review and steady progress. Research shows just 5–10 minutes of daily note review boosts exam performance—repetition works! Suggest they keep notes or textbooks by their bed to review before sleep and upon waking. Use weekly quizzes to keep them motivated and assess their progress. Stress the value of attendance and engagement—top students rarely miss class and often sit near the front. Help them build confidence step by step: from basic terminology, to drawing on blanks, to palpating on each other, reinforcing skills incrementally. Remind them: where there’s a will, there’s an A!

Fill in the Blank, Not Multiple Choice

For tactile learners in physical medicine, fill-in-the-blank testing is far more effective than multiple choice. Writing answers and coloring images stimulate neural pathways, reinforcing memory through active engagement rather than passive elimination of wrong answers. This method builds clearer communication skills, professionalism, and confidence—since real patients don’t present their problems as multiple choice. A great way to start is with blank skeletal drawings, having students label muscles, nerves, and vessels to develop 3D anatomical understanding. Once a solid foundation is built on paper, progress to hands-on skills like palpation, ROM testing, diagnosis, and treatment planning for a full clinical learning experience.

Actively Teach

Make learning interactive and hands-on. After covering basic terminology, review without labels and have students palpate the structures on themselves—encouraging them to practice at home with friends or family. Incorporate visual tools like free 3D atlases (ZygoteBody, Acland’s Video Atlas) to enhance spatial understanding. Whenever possible, include cadaver dissection or surgical observation—there’s no substitute for seeing real anatomical variation up close, and even experienced practitioners benefit from revisiting the dissection lab with a clinical eye.

Break the Material into Manageable Sections

Anatomy and clinical sciences can feel overwhelming, so keep lessons simple, engaging, and relevant. Think of anatomy as a new language—it takes time, repetition, and practice to become fluent. Break content into short, digestible segments with 20 minute lectures or less, then add a stretch or funny story to reset attention. Keep it engaging with demonstrations and practical application, and use ProHealth resources to help students retain and apply what they learn in their careers.

Real Life Application

Bridge the gap between theory and practice by showing students how each topic applies in real clinical settings. Help them move from asking, “Why do I need to know this?” to “How can I use this?”—a key step toward becoming a skilled healthcare professional. Share your own stories to illustrate how knowledge solves real problems, making lessons more meaningful and memorable. Students thrive when they see the direct, practical value of what they’re learning. Overall - HAVE FUN!
